The World Cup qualifiers in CONMEBOL and CONCACAF this weekend had quite contrastive results for the favorites. In South America region, there was no big surprise as Argentina and Brasil are still unbeaten but Selecao’s series of winning came to an end after being held by Colombia in a goalless draw while Argentina smashed Uruguay 3-0. In the north side, however, USA slumped to a defeat in Panama.

Tite’s men were hoping to continue their positive trend with another victory while travelling to Barraquilla. However, despite playing their best starting XI, Brasil had a hard time to break the deadlock. Led by Neymar on the upfront, Selecao could not find a way to score although they had several clear chances from the PSG star himself, Lucas Paqueta, Raphinha and Anthony. It was David Ospinna who was in-form and denied some of those opportunities. The home side had only one threatening attempt but Alisson easily blocked it.

Colombia vs Brasil 0-0

Goals: -

Colombia: David Ospina – Cuesta, J Mojica, Yerry Mina, J Medina – Jefferson Lerma (Matheus Uribe 53), Juan Quintero (Luis Sinisterra 74), Roger Martinez (Rafael Borre 53), Luis Diaz – Radamel Falcao (Duvan Zapata 74), W Barrios

Brasil: Alisson– Danilo, Alex Sandro, Eder Militao (Thiago Silva 72), Marquinhos – Fabinho, Fred, Lucas Paqueta – Gabriel Barbosa (Raphinha 61), Gabi Jesus (Anthony 71), Neymar

In the meantime, their archrival, Argentina secured another win at home after mustering a stalemate in Asuncion at the previous outing. Lionel Scaloni’s side smashed Uruguay 3-0 despite having to strive to keep themselves from conceding first as Luis Suarez and Co had at least three attempts to open the scoring but Emiliano Martinez denied twice while another one only hit the goal frame. Albiceleste finally took the advantage of wasteful Uruguay through Lionel Messi, Rodrigo de Paul and Lautaro Martinez. Such was enough to stay unbeaten alongside Brasil on the top two on the table. In the next fixture this midweek, they will be playing host to Peru and Uruguay respectively.

In CONCACAF zone, USA have to be careful as their world cup hope could be crushed again if they do not bounce back soon. They suffered a 0-1 defeat while meeting Panama on the road. Anibal Godoy scored the only goal of the game through his header. USMNT might still be sitting on the second on the table but they have only collected eight points, which is the same as Panama and only three points clear from El Salvador on the sixth. Should they fail to win again in the next fixture against Costa Rica this midweek, Gregg Belhalter’s men’s position could be in danger if either Canada and Panama which will be squaring off, manage to secure three points or even to share spoils. North and Central America only have three berths to automatically qualify to the final round in Qatar plus one ticket to go through via inter confederation play-off.
