The sports world is still shocked by the war between Russia and Ukraine. Many Ukrainian athletes have chosen to fight in their country instead of fleeing to a safe area. This demonstrates a total commitment to the sovereignty of their country. Among some of the athletes who have joined the Ukrainian army we can highlight:
- Dmytro Pidruchnyi (Biathlon): A former biathlon champion, Dmytro joined the Ukrainian National Guard after returning from the Winter Olympics.
- Wladimir Klitschko (boxing): This athlete retired from boxing in 2016, but joined the Ukrainian army. Wladimir won a gold medal in 1996 for Ukraine.
- Sergej Stachowski (Tennis): he is most famous for beating Roger Federer in the second round of Wimbledon in 2013 when he was ranked 116th. He joins the army at the age of 36.
- Oleh Luzhnyi (Football): This sportsman won the Premier League and FA Cup with Arsenal in the early 2000s. He joins the Ukrainian army at the age of 53.
