Europa League 2020/21 season brought another surprise in the round of 16, which just wrapped up last Friday followed by the quarterfinal and semifinal draw. Two favourites from UK, Tottenham Hotspurs and Glasgow Rangers which supposedly already had the advantage from the first leg, failed to seal one ticket to the next stage and became the victims of superb comeback of two Eastern European clubs, Dinamo Zagreb and Slavia Prague.
Spurs’ two-goal advantage from the first leg simply disappeared in Maksimir Stadium, Zagreb. They were hapless, frustrated to break the chain of Dinamo’s defence and eventually beaten 0-3 on extra time. The Croatian side finally broke the deadlock at the second half through Mislav Orsic who went on scoring two more to complete his hattrick in that memorable. Meanwhile, Rangers which has clinched their first Premiership title in ten years and managed to hold a draw in the first leg, were surprisingly defeated 0-2 at their home turf by Slavia Prague. Peter Olayinka and Nicola Stanciu scored the Czech’s side winning goal.
At the same time, Manchester United at last came out as a winner in the battle of Red Devils in San Siro in the midweek. Both sides still had a chance to qualify but the absence of Ibrahimovic till later at the second half really put Il Diavollo Rosso in difficulty to score. Ole Solskjaer’s men finally managed to break the deadlock by Paul Pogba’s goal. It was the only goal of the game which even the Swedish veteran star could not do anything to be AC Milan’s saviour in their European campaign.
At the quarterfinal, Marcus Rashford and Co will be facing off the La Liga side, Granada which crushed Molde in 3-2 aggregate. The other fixtures displays the encounter of the Champions of 1992 edition and the runner up of 1991 edition, AS Roma, which is considered as the only big match at this stage while those stunning underdogs, Dynamo Zagreb and Slavia Prague will be taking on Villareal and Arsenal.
The first leg will be played on the 8th while the second one is held on the 15th. The semifinal takes place on the 29th of April and 6th of May. The final could be all English final again just like two seasons ago, if all goes well, between Manchester United and Arsenal. Gdansk Arena, Poland will host the final on May 26.
