Barcelona’s hope to stay in Champions League eventually dashed after suffering an inevitable defeat. They have to join FC Porto and Sevilla to go down to Europa League, whereas AC Milan was unable to even finish third to continue their European campaign.
The saddest truth for Blaugrana fans came to reality as they were hapless against Die Roeten on the road on matchday sixth of UEFA Champions League this season. They failed to advance to the round of 16 for the first time since 2004. It was a total failure which even Xavi could not save. Bayern Munich seemed to leave no space for Sergio Busquets and Co to develop their tactical approach. Xavi’s men barely have clear chances in Allianz Arena. The home side finally trounced them 3-0 with the goals from Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala. Barcelona have to face a harsh reality that their current squad has yet been up for the tough rivalry in UCL and could only finish third.
Bayern Munich vs Barcelona 3-0
Goals: Thomas Muller (34), Leroy Sane (43), Jamal Musiala (62)
Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer – Dayot Upamecano, Niklas Sule (Tanguy Nianzou 78), Benjamin Pavard, Alphonse Davies (Omar Richards 71) – Jamal Musiala, Corentin Tolisso (Marc Roca 60), Thomas Muller, Kingsley Coman (Buona Sarr (71), Leroy Sane – Robert Lewandowski (Malik Tilman 78)
Barcelona: Marc Ter-Stegen – Clement Lenglet, Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, Jordi Alba (Oscar Mingueza 31) – Sergio Busquets, Frankie de Jong (Riqui Puig 73), Gavi (Yusuf Demir 86) – Memphis Depay, Ousmane Dembele (Phillippe Coutinho 73), Sergino Dest (Nico Gonzalez 46)
Aside from Barcelona, Sevilla and FC Porto are also going down to Europa League. On match day sixth of UCL, Julen Lopetegui’s men and the Europa League winner in 2003 and 2011, Porto were beaten by RB Salzburg and Atletico Madrid 1-0 and 3-1 respectively. A single goal of Noah Okafor sent the Spanish side back to where Sevilla is master at, whereas Antoine Griezmann’s, Angel Correa’s and Rodrigo de Paul’s goal at their home turf forced Sergio Conceicao’s men to continue their continental campaign in the second tier. The other teams which have to go through the same path are Borussia Dortmund, Zenit St.Petersburg, Sheriff Tiraspol and RB Leipzig. One game between Atalanta and Villarreal was delayed due to the thick snow in Bergamo.
The most unexpected result was the fact that the 7-time UCL winner AC Milan could not take the advantage of playing at home. They lost 2-1 against the Reds despite taking the lead first. Stefano Pioli’s side had to sit at the rock bottom of the group and headed to the exit way too early. This is one of their worst campaign in Champions League in the club’s history as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co only collected four points in six fixtures.
