Champions League third qualifying round saw various results from PSV, Monaco, Europa League runners-up, Rangers and Benfica at the first leg.

The Dutch side PSV Eindhoven stretched their positive performance in UCL qualifiers after clinching a thrilling 5-3 win in Dutch Super Cup against Ajax on the weekend. They managed to pick up one point while travelling to Monaco. Ruud Van Nilsterooy’s men opened the scoring through Joey Veerman’s long range shot before sitting quite deep at the backline to keep their lead. It forced the home side to only rely on long shot outside the six-yard box to create chances. However, Monaco finally was able to break the deadlock as Axel Disasi found the equaliser in 80th minute. It was enough for PSV to keep their chance for progressing to the group stage alive.

Monaco vs PSV Eindhoven 1-1

Goals: Axel Disasi (80); Joey Veerman (39)

Monaco: Alexander Nubel  – Guillermo Maripan, Ismael Jakobs, Vanderson, Axel Disasi – Matazo, Fofana, Alexander Golovin (Gelson Martins 75) – Kevin Volland (Breel Embolo 75), Wissam Ben Yedder (Sofiane Diop 84),Takumi Minamino (Diatta 67)

In the meantime, Glasgow Rangers shockingly returned empty handed while taking on the debutante, Union St.Guilloise on the road. The two-time Europa League runners-up in 2008 and last season suffered a 2-0 loss from Teddy Tauma’s goal and Dante Vanzeir’s penalty. Giovanni Van Bronckhost’s men would have to bounce back in the reverse fixture to go through the playoff round. Otherwise, the Scottish side would have to be back competing in the UEFA’s second tier again.

The two-time Champions, Benfica, had a better results than their contenders. Roger Schimdt’s men ran rampant against Denmark’s Midtylland and won 4-1 at home. Goncalo Ramos bagged a hattrick on 17, 33 and 61. Another goal was scored by a promising talent from Argentina, Enzo Fernandez. The visitors could only net a consolation goal on 78th minute through Pione Sisto’s penalty.

Apparently, Benfica was not the only one who secured big win in the midweek. Israel Champions Maccabi Haifa, Red Star Belgrade and Norway’s Bodoe/Glimt also trounced their oppositions to clear their way to the next round. They smashed Apollon Limassol, Pyunik and Lithuanian side Zalgiris Vilnius 4-0 and 5-0 each respectively.
