Two teams who stunned the favourites in Champions League and Europa League round of 16 this week, Atletico and West Ham United will encounter different challenge for their dream silverware. Los Chochoneros are set for another fixture against Manchester team, The Cityzens, while The Hammers takes on Lyon at the quarter finals.


Diego Simeone’s side were able to pick up a 1-0 win while facing off Cristiano Ronaldo and Co on the road. United had been knocking on the door but it was Atletico who eventually scored from Renan Lodi’s header. The Red Devils were frustrated to break the deadlock till the final whistle. Their Spanish counterpart, Villareal also shocked the fans after sending Juventus to the exit. Despite playing away from home, The Yellow Submarines managed to trash the Old Lady 3-0 by taking huge advantage of the set piece scenario. Two of them were from well-taken penalty by Gerard Moreno dan Arnaut Danjuma while another goal was scored by Pau Torres’s header.


At the last eight, they will definitely be taking on the favourites. Los Rojiblancos is facing off Manchester City while Villareal is set to meet Bayern Munich. If both could advance, Joao Felix and Co could be squaring off in Madrid derby again, should La Liga league leaders manage to ease past the reigning champions, Chelsea. Meanwhile, Unai Emery’s men could be potentially drawn against Liverpool/ Benfica, if they are through. The first leg is held on 5th and 6th of April whereas the second leg is scheduled in the following week.


In Europa League saw the record holder Sevilla heading to the early exit in the round of 16. Julen Lopetegui’s side were beaten 0-2 by West Ham at London Stadium. Czech Rep international, Tomas Soucek opened the scoring as he headed home to force the game carry on to the extra time. The Hammers finally sealed one berth at the last eight. Luckily, Sevilla’s failure to progress was not followed by another favorite, Barcelona. They could finally snatch a narrow 2-1 win versus the 2000 UEFA Cup champions, Galatasaray while visiting Istanbul. Despite conceding first through Marcao’s header, Blaugrana replied quickly as Pedri found the equaliser. Gabonese striker Pierre Aubameyang finally netted the winning goal after taking advantage of a rebound.


At the quarter final, Barcelona is set to face Eintracht Frankfurt while West Ham will be taking on Lyon. Both sides could be locking horns at the last four, should both manage to advance. On the other path, one of the two Italian club left in the European competition this season, Atalanta encounters RB Leipzig which gained a bye due to Spartak Moscow’s banning. The winner of this match will meet either Rangers or Sporting Braga. The first games will be staged on April, 7 and the reverse fixtures take place a week later.
