After the departure of Steven Gerrard recently to Aston Villa, Rangers is hunting for his successor with Lampard is unfortunately not included on their list.

Glasgow Rangers management seem to be still taking their time considerably. It has been reported that the club appoint a team of caretaker instead of immediately naming the new boss. The caretakers consist of the 39-year old Jermaine Defoe, B-team manager David McCallum and his assistant, Brian Gilmour, plus the goalkeeping coach Colin Stewart.

Rangers has confirmed that the negotiation is still underway with the shortlisted candidates. They might be prioritising their former players, instead of opting to hire a figure without any connection to the club. Apparently, such could be the reason why Frank Lampard, who just turned down his chance to return on the touchline from his dugout, is not on The Gers' radar. So are Ronald Koeman, Alex Neil and Callum Davidson, who have not been the favorite among the fans despite being touted for the position by the media.

It is interesting to see who the three candidates might be. There have been several former Gers man who are tipped by the media and some of them even have already had notable experience outside Scotland. Yet, recently the club has been even suggesting some unknown names. These could be the probable figures on the list.

  • Giovanni Van Bronckhost: He is the only confirmed candidate as well as the favor to take the post. The 46-year old Dutchman is currently out of job after his unsuccessful spell in Chinese Super League in 2020. However, he made a quite instant success previously while taking charge of Feyenoord in 2015. Van Bronckhost led them clinch KNVB Cup in the first season, followed by Eredivisie in 2017 and another Dutch Cup 2018, plus two Dutch Super Cup in 2017 and 2018.
  • Kjetil Knudsen: the Norwegian boss has been on the radar recently after leading Bodo/Glimt dismantling AS Roma 6-1 in Europa Conference League plus holding Jose Mourinho's men in a 2-2 draw on the road. Knudsen is the key man behind his team's success in winning their first ever league title in 2020.
  • Alexander Blessin: The current manager of Belgian side KV Oostende is out of the blue identified as one of the unlikely candidates. However, the rise of German gaffer's profile is mainly due to Rangers' new signing Fashion Sakala's hope to reunite with his former boss.
  • Gennaro Gatusso: The former Napoli boss seems like an ideal contender for Van Bronckhost. He once played for Gers in 1997/98 season before being famous in Milan. His managerial experience is quite promising with Coppa Italia title in 2020 while taking charge of Lorenzo Insigne and Co. The world cup winner is currently unattached to any club after his sudden resignation from Fiorentina after only less than a month under the helm of the club.

There have been other names such as Ally McCoist, the former Rangers boss from 2011 to 2014 during the club's tough time, and Derek McInnes who did incredible job in Aberdeen by winning Scottish Cup in 2014 and SPL runner up in 2017. If Rangers is looking for a high profile manager, Van Bronckhost is the perfect one, or Gatusso as a back-up plan.
