Paris hosted the second round matches of the WTA Roland Garros tennis tournament.

The first racket of the world, Simona Halep, calmly coped with Carolina Begu. Anna Karolina Shmidlova from Slovakia defeated US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka in the second round of Roland Garros.

“I’m extremely happy because it’s my favorite Grand Slam and favorite tournament of the year. I always play good here. I had many chances in last couple of years. I had match points or really close matches. I always play good here, just didn’t close it,” Schmiedlova said after match.

Elina Svitolina defeated Renata Zarazua from Mexico in two sets. American Serena Williams withdrew from the match with Tsvetana Pironkova from Bulgaria.

“I really wanted to give an effort here. It’s my achilles that didn’t have enough to properly heal after the Open. I was able to get it somewhat better, but just looking long-term in this tournament, will I be able to get through enough matches? For me, I don’t think I could. This is not a nagging injury, this is an acute injury. So if it was my knee that would be more really devastating for me. But this is something that just happened and it’s super acute and that’s totally different,” Williams said.
