A number of well-known players apparently have opted to play in Ligue 1 next season with the likes of Luis Suarez, Nicolas Tagliafico and Breel Embolo, while former Lyon stars choose to return to their old club.

Olympique Marseille seems to be one of the most active clubs in this summer transfer window. After completing the permanent deals of several loanees such as Matteo Guendozi, Arkadiusz Milik, Cengiz Under, and the goalie Pau Lopez, the runners-up in 2021/22 season has sealed a move of Colombian Luis Suarez from Granada, Ruben Blanco from Celta Vigo and the versatile Chancel Mbemba from Porto.

The 24-year old Suarez, not the well-known Uruguayan, has been one of the promising forward whose side unfortunately failed to avoid relegation last season. He registered eight goals and four assists with Granada before taking OM’s offer for €10 million. Suarez would have to fight for the spot on the attacking side with Polish international, Arkadiusz Milik, Gerson, Cengiz Under plus the skipper Dmitri Payet next season, not only for the domestic campaign but also for the continental one as OM is back in UCL.

Ruben Blanco and Mbemba are other names to reinforce the squad under Igor Tudor. The former Celta Vigo goalie will be a deputy for Pau Lopez while Mbemba can offer more flexible role as he can feature in all positions at the backline plus defensive midfielder. The RD Congo international made 35 appearances in Portugal La Liga and Europa League last season.

Meanwhile, Lyon successfully signed Argentina international, Nicolas Tagliafico after selling Leo Dubois to Galatasaray. The left back who has been Barcelona and Leeds target lately opted for reunion with his former boss in Ajax, Peter Bosz for €4.20 million. He contributed two goals and two assists in 23 games, mostly as a substitute last season.

In addition, Les Gones also recruited back some of their former stars such as Alexander Lacazette, Remy Riou and Corentin Tolisso from Arsenal, Caen and Bayern Munich respectively. Lacazette and Tolisso left Lyon for The Gunners and Die Roten in 2017 whereas Riou did in 2006 without making a debut for the Ligue 1 giant. They are hopeful that they could help Lyon back to finish in the top three next season in their second stints.

Another giant in French top flight, Monaco, has made another marquee signing, Breel Embolo, for their next season’s campaign. The Swiss international agreed to move with €12.50 million transfer fee from Borussia M’Gladbach. He is the versatile forward who could feature as attacking right or as number 10 if necessary. Embolo bagged eight goals and provided three assists in 28 Bundesliga matches last season. He is definitely a great addition for Phillip Clement’s men who would start their continental campaign earlier against PSV Eindhoven in the second qualifying round of UEFA Champions League.
