Marcelo Bielsa is no longer the only manager who quits the new job before even the work for a new season in Serie A begun. His strange footstep has just been followed by Genarro Gatusso this week. The former Napoli boss made a shocking decision on leaving his post in Fiorentina, the club which just appointed him after being sacked by Il Partenopei at the end of 2020/21 season.

Gatusso reportedly abandoned the head coach position at the Tuscan side only 23 days after being announced last month, on May, 25. Such certainly disrupts La Viola's preparation for the new season. The club officially made a statement regarding the news earlier this week.

"ACF Fiorentina and Mister Rino Gattuso, by mutual agreement, have decided not to follow up on the previous agreements and therefore not to start the next football season together.”

Such decision, according to Sky Sports and Gazetta Della Sport, apparently involved the third party, Gestifute, a football agency representing the former AC Milan stars in 2000s, and owned by one of the world famous football super agent, Jorge Mendes. It is believed that they had a disagreement on the players the agency proposed to Fiorentina, Valencia's Goncalo Guedes and Porto midfielder Sergio Olivera. They also happened to be the Gattusso's target to sign for next season. Unfortunately, La Viola found their transfer fee too high and preferred the ones with the lower price tag. Such was the deal breaker and Jorge Mendes's agency service seemed to play a bigger role in this dispute than Gatusso himself.

Gatusso had been reportedly to agree to be the successor of Guiseppe Iachini with $3 million annual salary before the dispute started. The former Italian international began his managerial career in 2013 when he was appointed as the coach of FC Sion of Switzerland. Yet, it did not go well. After taking charge of Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa, he moved to his former team, AC Milan in 2017 but only stayed for two years without any silverwares. Gatusso only led Rossonerri to finish on the sixth and fifth on the table consecutively. His next spell in Napoli was better when he brought Il Partenopei win Coppa Italia 2020. However, his contract was not extended last season due to missing the Champions League spot in the Serie A final round.

His 23-day stint in Florence was not exactly a record. Five years ago, the current Leeds United manager, Marcelo Bielsa resigned after being at the helm of Lazio just for two days! The reason behind the Argentine's shocking quit was not so much different from Gatusso's current cause, the new signings issue, although it was more of the former Argentina national team boss' personal decision rather than being under the influence of the third party. No wonder that Bielsa is often nicknamed 'El Loco', despite still being respected as one of the genius figures in football.

Now, Gatusso will have to find the new team elsewhere, especially after his talk to move to Tottenham broke down, whereas Fiorentina is eyeing the former Roma, Marseille and Lyon boss, Rudi Garcia, and Claudio Ranieri as their next target. The latter once led La Viola in mid 1990s during the club's memorable time with their legend, Gabriel Batistuta in it.
