Europa League has just wrapped up its round of 32 as well as the draw for the round of 16. Three former champions surprisingly were unable to overturn the situation to advance to the next stage. They are the 1989 Champions Napoli, the 1988 winners Bayer Leverkusen and the winner of 1978 edition, PSV Eindhoven.

Napoli failed to go through after only winning over Granada 2-1, which was not enough to overturn their disadvantage since they lost 0-2 in the first leg. Pietr Zielinksi opened the scoring but Granada equalised through Angel Montoro. Il Partenopei needed two more goals to qualify but only managed to score one by Fabian Ruiz. Bayer Leverkusen was even worse than the Italian side. They were beaten 0-2 at home by SC Young Boys, which made the agregate 3-6 as Peter Bosz’s men were already stunned 3-4 in the previous meeting. Meanwhile, PSV Eindhoven could not bounce back properly after only sealing 2-1 win over Olympiakos at home. They were obliged to defeat the Greek side 2-0 after losing 2-4 in the reverse fixture. Roger Schmidt’s men actually did take two goal lead from 44th minute by the Israeli international Eran Zahavi’s brace but their dream to qualify harshly ended on 88th minute as Ahmed Hassan Mahgoub found the back of their net.

Meanwhile, the draw result for round of 16 has been released and all favorites shall be satisfied with it as they will not encounter any other high profile team, except one, Manchester United. The Red Devils will have to take one the Italian red devil, Il Diavolo Rosso, AC Milan. This is the one and only most anticipated match at this stage. This encounter also marks the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Milan’s Swedish towering forward will be back to his former team which he brought to win the Europa League title in 2017 before switching to LA Galaxy in the following season. No wonder that this clash is bound to be exciting, provided the Swede is fully fit for the match. The first leg of this round is held on 11th March while the second leg takes place on the 18th.
