Two big signings from the two main favourites, Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez, made an impressive debut while the disappointment still lingers in Manchester United’s start.

The Norwegian star, Erling Haaland made a promising start in Premier League this season by netting a brace while visiting West Ham. He scored the winning goals leading to The Citizens’ 2-0 victory. Haaland opened the scoring through a penalty and doubled his tally as he slotted home into the far left corner in the back of the net. Those could be the first of many more goals for the former Dortmund man who is the first player to score a brace in the debut after Sergio Aguero, the all time club’s top scorer. It was a satisfying start for Guardiola’s men, especially after the disappointing loss in Community Shield last weekend.

West Ham vs Manchester City 0-2

Goals: Erling Haaland (36, 65)

Manchester City: Ederson – Nathan Ake, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo – Rodri (Kalvin Phillips 89), Kevin de Bruyne (Cole Palmer 88), Ilkay Gundogan (Bernardo Silva 78) -  Erling Haaland (Julian Alvarez 78) , Jack Grealish (Phil Foden (Riyad Mahrez 88)

West Ham: Lukas Fabianski (Alphonse Areola 29) –  Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell, Vladimir Coufal, Johnson – Tomas Soucek, Declan Rice, Manuel Lanzini ( Said Benrahma 57), Jarred Bowen (Flynn Downes 91), Pablo Fornals (Conor Coventry 91) – Michail Antonio (Gianluca Scamacca 57)

Darwin Nunez also impressed Jurgen Klopp in his debut, although he did it after coming off the bench. The Uruguayan forward bagged the equaliser and provided an assist for Mo Salah. Unfortunately, The Reds failed to secure three points as they only mustered a 2-2 draw against Fulham. Alexander Mitrovic’s brace prevented Liverpool from snatching a win in Craven Cottage last weekend. Jurgen Klopp’s side had been unlucky as well as Luiz Diaz’s and Jordan Henderson’s shots only hit the crossbar. It is quite a minor setback they have to deal with to avoid being left behind in this season’s title race.

In the meantime, Manchester United does not seem to be able to get away from their haunting disappointment yet. They began their campaign at home with a bad start despite being led by their new manager, Erik Ten Hag. United suffered a 2-1 loss from Brighton, who even performed better last weekend. Pascal Gros scored twice to silent the home fans in the first half. The Red Devils only managed to bag a consolation gol from Alexis McAlister’s own goal. It was definitely something Ten Hag least expected. No wonder that Frankie de Jong and their top target in the summer transfer window have not been keen on switching side to the club who is currently in their degrading phase.
