The clash of Brazil and Argentina in Sao Paulo last weekend was supposed to be the home side's opportunity for a payback time after their bitter lost in Copa America 2021 final last July. However, the match did not even last for ten minutes before it was halted by Brazilian officials due to the four Argentine breaching health protocols.
It was reported that several local public health officials, including the ones from Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) suddenly entered the pitch about seven minutes after the kick off and said that there had been four Argentina players violating the local covid-19 protocols.
“We got to this point because everything that ANVISA directed, from the first moment, was not fulfilled. “(The four players) were directed to remain isolated while awaiting deportation, but they did not comply. They went to the stadium and they entered the field, in a series of breaches.", ANVISA director Antonio Barra Torres stated.
According to regulations in Brazil on COVID-19 issue, anyone flying from UK, India and South Africa within 14 days shall be prohibited to enter Brazilian territory without 14 days of quarantine on arrival. Those four Argentines who have been at the center of the dispute, Aston Villa men, Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia, plus duo Spurs, Giovanni Lo Celso and Christian Romero, have been accused by the local government stating that they might have falsified the statement on not coming from UK in the last 14 days, although they certainly had with a fixture in Caracas meddling in between. Those players remain the few who were released by the Premier League side considering the other teams' reluctance on doing so despite FIFA's request and looming suspension, should the players' national federation opt to wage a legal battle in court. This is actually what Paraguay is currently doing. They object Newcastle United's stance on releasing Miguel Almiron for the international fixtures.
Regarding such issue, there has been no clarity from the Argentina side as well over their status. The quartet previously said that they would return to England after the match against Brazil meaning they would miss the third game while their boss Lionel Scaloni denied it and said that they would be playing for three games.
Meanwhile, the clash of two South American giants itself will be postponed till further notice. These two teams are still leading on the top two of the table in CONMEBOL world cup 2022 qualifier.
