Brasilian clubs are likely to dominate again in this year’s Copa Libertadores. Five of eight contestants at the quarter finals in this continental top flight are from Brasilian Serie A, while the remaining three sides are the representative of their archrival, Argentina.

Five Brasilian sides who managed to go through to at the round of 8 are the reigning champions, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Atletico Paranaense, Corinthias and Atletico Mineiro. They are bound to seal at most three spots in the semi finals. One spot will be definitely taken by the Argentine teams, either Talleres or 1994 Champions, Velez Sarsfield. However, Argentina could still hope to steal one more berth at the last four, should Estudiantes manage to beat Luis Felipe Scolari’s Atletico Paranaense.

In the past three years, this South American top tier competition has been won by Brasilian teams. Palmeiras clinched the title twice consecutively in 2020 and 2021. Previously, Flamengo lifted the trophy. In the last two seasons, it even contested all Brasilian finals in a row. Abel Fereira’s men happened to be the fortunate one in such finals as they thumped their rivals, Santos and Flamengo respectively.

In this year’s edition, Palmeiras is the favorite once again alongside Atletico Mineiro. They are currently sitting on the top and second on the table of Brasilian top fight. The former hammered Cerro Porteno 8-0 on aggregate in the round of 16 while the latter had to strive to knockout Ecuador’s Emelec by 2-1 on aggregate. Sadly, they both will have to square off at the quarter finals. The winner would be taking on either Atletico Paranense or Estudiantes.

Meanwhile, in the other semifinal, it will be a clash of Argentina and Brasil sides. The winner of Velez Sarsfield and Talleres is set to challenge either Corinthians or Flamengo. Velez and Corinthias are the favorite as they were able to eliminate two Argentine powerhouses, River Plate and Boca Juniors at the round of 16. However, their positions in the domestic competitions are in contrast to one another. Velez is still stuck on the lower table while Corinthians is sitting on the third in the standings. Their oppositions, Talleres and Flamengo, are currently neither in top five on the table.

The quarter finals will be staged in August. The first leg is held on the 2nd to 4th whereas the second one is on the 9th to 11th.
