Matchday two in CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers this weekend put another disappointing result for USMNT. After a remarkable result in the summer with two titles in hand, Greg Berhalter’s men somehow seemed to be in the declining trend already. They are still unbeaten but fail to win again. This time they stumbled at home game against Canada. The Yanks were held in a 1-1 draw.

Despite losing Zack Steffen, Giovanni Reyna and Weston McKennie who are either injured or tested positive COVID-19, the current CONCACAF Gold Cup winner should have had any difficulty to beat Canada with at least one goal difference, especially as their skipper Christian Pulisic, Barcelona man Sergino Dest and Jordan Fefok were in the line up. However, things did not work out as expected since it was Canada which had the first attempt to score. Bayern man Alphonse Davies managed to penetrate USA’s defence right side and made his run till the goal line before passing the ball to Cyle Larin but the striker’s shot was denied by Matt Turner. Yet, Christian Pulisic and Co responded well as Jordan Fafok and the skipper himself had some decent chances to score but the Chelsea wide attacker wasted it as his close range strike hit the post. After the interval, Berhalter’s side finally broke the deadlock through Brenden Aaronson as he tapped the ball into the empty net by taking advantage of Antonee Robinson’s cross. Unfortunately, their lead did not last long as Canada managed to put back on the level term as Cyle Larin bagged an equaliser in a fairly similar way as the American’s goal. Davies cut inside and pass it through Larin who was already at the mouth of the empty goal. This is their second draw consecutively after a goalless stalemate against El Salvador earlier in the midweek. They have to bounce back on the next game while facing off Honduras to avoid drowning into the deep of the standings.

Meanwhile, their classic contender Mexico snatched another win. This time they did it on the road against Costa Rica. Thanks to Orbelin Pineda’s penalty just before the interval helped Tata Martino’s side stay on the top of the table. In the previous outing, they also clinched a narrow win over Jamaica. Their next fixture will be more challenging as they will be travelling to Panama who managed to crush Reggae Boyz 3-0 on the road on matchday two. Here are the complete fixtures on matchday three in the midweek.
