Three Argentine internationals have been on the news during the current transfer window, two of whom have found their new teams while Mauro Icardi’s fate is still dangling.
Three Argentine players, Giovanni Simeone, Sergio Romero and Mauro Icardi have been linked with a move in the past few weeks. The first two eventually have just sealed the deal recently, whereas the last one is currently in progress of holding talks with potential suitors.
Giovanni, who is the son of Atletico boss, Diego Simeone, has agreed to move on loan to Napoli despite just completing his move to Hellas Verona from Cagliari. Giovanni’s form last season in Verona when he was also on loan, has impressed Il Partenopei which has been actively eyeing Lorenzo Insigne’s and Dries Mertens’ replacement. Those two forwards opted their departure from Napoli after failing the negotiation on the new contract. The 27-year old frontman has been deemed the suitable successor. He helped Verona finish 9th last season and registered 17 goals and six assists in 36 games of Serie A. There is a peculiar clause in his transfer deals regarding the option to buy for Luciano Spaletti’s side. They are bound to purchase the Argentine if Napoli managed to secure one spot in UCL and Giovanni could score minimum 20 goals in the domestic league only. Such target will be quiet doable unless the former Genoa, Fiorentina dan Cagliari man takes sometime to adapt with Spaletti’s tactics. He is definitely aiming for one spot in World Cup 2022 squad despite only making five appearances and netting one in international fixtures.
Another one who has landed to his new club is the former Manchester United second goalie, Sergio Romero. He has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the South American giant, Boca Juniors. Previously, he was said to welcome a return to Old Trafford after De Gea’s backup, Dean Henderson, opted to move on loan to Nottingham Forest for playing more regularly. However, Romero who spent 2021/22 season playing for Serie A side, Venezia, chose to fly home instead of going back to Premier League. Romero’s form last season was quite satisfactory before suffering knee injury on March onwards till the end of the season. The 35-year old shot-stopper was even awarded man of the match twice. He was the top performer of the club as well throughout the season despite only featuring in 16 matches. In Boca, Romero, who was one of the key figure in Albiceleste during their 2010 and 2014 world cup campaign, is set to be the backup or compete the mainstay between the sticks, Agustin Rossi.
Last but not least, Mauro Icardi is one of the few PSG men who has been told to find a new club but yet found one to sign. The 29-year old striker has been linked with a move to Manchester United, Galatasaray and most recently Newcastle United. However, there has not been any confirmation yet regarding which side he would pick. His agent and infamous wife, Wanda Nara, has been in talks with the first two clubs, whereas Le Parisien reportedly offers him to The Magpies. Icardi only managed to score five goals in 30 appearances last season. It was a downfall compared to his first two season with PSG. The former Inter skipper was able to score double figures, with 20 goals plus four assists in 2019/20 and 13 goals and six assists in 2020/21. The arrival of Messi definitely reduces his minute and role in the club. Icardi only earns eight caps with Argentina and scores one in a friendly game.
